Foot rings, bowls, and the beginners hump

I worked on throwing bowls this week. It has proved to be challenging. I need to work on rims and shapes for them. I would like to get my walls a little thinner. I have managed to avoid the beginners hump so far and hope that will continue. I'm playing with different foot ring shapes and really trying to fit the shape of the foot to the shape of the bowl. More to come!

Handled.

This week I rethrew some forms that I liked that I had previously thrown too small. I still have trouble accounting for shrinkage. My new balls were 1lb compared to the 1/2lb I had used before. My main focus was pulling handles. I found that pulling right off of the form helped me to better fit the handle to each individual form. All of the handles were started and pulled basically the same way. Depending on the size of the form I start with the base of the handle, where it is attached, is wider or thinner. I feel I have made significant progress in pulling handles although more practice is definitely needed. I wanted to continue to work on handles that were cut out of the rim and folded back to make a handle but focused on pulling. I WILL come back to those mugs!

Mugs

This week I've worked on tweaking earlier forms explored through the cylinder project that I failed to blog on. I've experimented with the texture on these forms that I've used previously. I have also pulled my first successful handles and attached a few that are not so bad. I tried out my flameware for the first time today. The goal was to make a pan but I got overly ambitious trying to texture it and it fell apart before I got it off the wheel. I WILL work more with it this week after I get my mugs done!
